Meet the Crew

Becca Kenney

Co-Founder

Hey I’m Becca and I’m originally from Cary, NC and went to UNC (go heels!!) for undergrad with majors in Exercise Sport Science and Studio Art. I grew up spending every summer on Bald Head since I was 4 and learned how to surf on the island when I was 5. I never looked back since then, and now surfing takes Scott and I all over the world to explore new places when we’re not at BHI for the summers.  I think my favorite places we’ve been so far have been Nicaragua for the waves and Taiwan for the food-lots and lots of dumplings. Coming from a family of 5 kids, I learned to share pretty fast and now I love sharing the surf stoke with others!!

Scott Tuttle

Co-Founder

My name is Scott Tuttle and I am from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In 2018 I graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in mass communications. After graduating I started traveling around the world with Becca in search of new and exciting waves, and it has taken us to surf spots in 5 different continents around the globe. I have been a member of the Bald Head Island community since 1997, and have been teaching surf lessons here the past 5 summers. When I’m not on east beach teaching and surfing, you can find me working behind the bar at Jules Salty Grub and Island Pub.

Ryan Kenney

Surf Instructor

Hey! My name is Ryan Kenney and I’m from Cary, NC. I’m currently a rising Junior at UNC-CH majoring in statistics and minoring in sustainability. My parents have had a house on BHI since before I was born so I’ve been fortunate enough to have spent every summer of my life on the island. I came down just weeks after I was born and was enchanted by the beach so much I even grew to love the taste of sand. If I’m not surfing, I’m probably skating, playing soccer, adventuring on the boat or working at Jules Salty Grub and Island Pub

Phoebe Linstead

Media Manager/Photographer

My name is Phoebe Linstead I am from Chapel Hill, North Carolina and have been spending summers on Bald Head since I was little: this has entailed me gaining experience in scheduling and managing excursion reservations. I began surf photography as a hobby 2 years ago and it now has grown into a business that I started with my friend Grace. During the off months I attend University of North Carolina Wilmington where I am majoring in Global Business and minoring in sustainability. I consider Bald Head my home and I am excited to share my love for it through photography

Jackson McGeough

Jackson McGeough

Surf Instructor

My name is Jackson McGeough and I am from Huntersville North Carolina. I am a sophomore at Rollins college in Orlando Florida studying environmental science and sustainability, sailing, and pursuing my love for photography and the outdoors. I believe that a bad day surfing is better than any day at work, and growing up I have tested this theory with lots of board sports and outdoor activities. I love to travel, explore new things, and teach others. Learning how to surf was one of the best experiences I have ever had, and now I get to relive that vicariously through my lessons with sandy backpack students!

Felix Williams

Surf Instructor

Hey, I’m Felix. I’m from Greensboro NC but I spend my summers on BHI and have grown up on the island and in the water. I am a rising senior at Grimsley high school and hope to study in college at a place close to the beach. I started surfing when I was 5 and was taught on east beach. I quickly grew to love the sport and I have traveled to many foreign countries to chase waves, however, I will choose surfing on Bald Head Island over anything else. It will be my second year teaching surf lessons and my first year with the Sandy Backpacks crew. I couldn’t be more psyched for this upcoming summer!

Fritz Veltman

Fritz Veltman

Surf Instructor

Hey! I’m Fritz Veltman and I’m from Charlotte, NC. I’ve been lucky enough to spend every summer on Bald Head since I was born and I quickly fell in love with surfing here on the island when I was 9. Next year I will be a junior at Cate Boarding School in California where I get to surf all the time. Despite the waves being better in California, Bald Head still remains my favorite place to surf, and I’m excited to share the opportunity to surf in this special place with all of you guys!
